Restart / reboot
The router stops and starts again. The connection is interrupted temporarily; configuration is normally retained. Follow the device’s documented restart method.
Factory reset
The router returns to its factory configuration. Custom network names, passwords, and other settings can be erased. The equipment must be configured again.
When a restart is worth considering
After checking the local connection and correct address, a restart can be a recovery step for unresponsive equipment. Tell other users before interrupting their connection. Let the device finish starting before testing again.
Do not confuse a reset button with a power control
Physical controls and press durations vary. Read the exact model manual and verify which control you are using. There is no universal button-hold duration that is appropriate for every router.
A reset requires a recovery plan
- Find the correct manual and identify the hardware revision.
- Check whether the internet provider must supply connection or activation information.
- Record essential network settings or create a configuration backup where supported.
- Plan to reconnect devices after reconfiguration.
When the problem is only a forgotten password
Try the supported password-recovery route first. If you can still manage the network in its official app, check whether it offers the setting you need before removing the existing configuration.
