Consider an extender for a small coverage gap, mesh for several areas with coordinated management, or a wired access point where you can run Ethernet. First confirm that the incoming internet connection works properly.
Compare the three approaches

What “backhaul” means
Backhaul is the connection carrying traffic between a wireless point and the rest of the network. With wireless backhaul, walls and interference can affect both your device’s link to the point and the point’s link back. Wired backhaul uses Ethernet for the latter connection.

Compatibility is model-specific. For example, TP-Link publishes separate Deco wiring rules for router mode and access-point mode. Check the diagrams for your configuration before adding a switch; do not assume every device labelled “mesh” can join every mesh system.
Keep your provider’s equipment in the decision
If you have an ISP gateway, establish which device will route the network. Supported access-point or bridge modes may help, but they are different settings on different equipment. Ask your provider before changing a gateway that also supplies telephone or television services.
Do not assume an Ethernet socket on an extender means it supports the wired mode you want. Read the exact model manual. Also check whether an advertised feature requires a paid subscription or a manufacturer account.
Match the purchase to your home
- Small flat, one weak corner: try router placement first; evaluate an extender only if the gap remains.
- Several floors, no Ethernet: compare compatible mesh systems and plan locations with good links between points.
- Home office with Ethernet: a wired access point can add Wi-Fi while the router stays where it is.
- Good coverage but slow everywhere: use the baseline checks before buying coverage equipment.

Radio performance depends on the device, layout, configuration, and interference. Use a retailer’s applicable return terms and repeat the same room tests after installation.
