If the same device works well near the router but poorly in another room, investigate Wi-Fi coverage. If every room is slow, check the internet connection and router before adding more wireless equipment.
Measure a baseline you can compare
Use one laptop or phone and the same speed-test service. Pause your own large downloads and note other network activity. Take two or three readings in each location; a single result can reflect temporary congestion. A speed test uses internet data and is not a guarantee of what every app will achieve.
- Near the router: test in the same room with a clear path.
- In the problem room: repeat with the same device and test service.
- By Ethernet, if available: connect a computer to a LAN port on the router and turn off that computer’s Wi-Fi for the comparison. Restore it afterward. Record the adapter and port speed if known.

Make the free placement changes first
Move the router to a more central, open position if the existing cables allow it. Keep it out of a cupboard and away from large metal obstructions. Test after each change. Building materials and floors matter more than a manufacturer’s advertised maximum coverage figure.
A wireless extender or mesh point needs a usable connection back to the router or another point. Place it before the dead zone, then use its official signal indicator or app to check the link. Moving it into the room with no usable signal can leave it with little to repeat.

Choose the next step from your results
For one weak corner, a suitable extender may be enough. For several rooms or floors, compare a mesh system with a wired access point. If Ethernet is practical, a wired link avoids relying on Wi-Fi for that part of the path. Read mesh vs extender vs access point before choosing equipment.
When to involve your provider
If the wired baseline is also poor, record when it happens and whether multiple devices are affected. Check the provider’s outage information and discuss the results with support. Adding a mesh system cannot repair a fault in the incoming service.
Avoid a factory reset as the first experiment. A restart and a reset have very different effects.
